Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood

Wow. How does one describe this anime series? One of the best ever? Definitely. Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood is an anime adaption of the manga by the same name. Now to confuse things a bit, one anime adaption had already been created with the name "Full Metal Alchemist". However, that series had to diverge from the manga fairly early in the run because the manage wasn't finished. So that story is very different. This version is the most faithful to the original manga.

The basic story is about two brothers, Edward and Alphonse. They live in a world where their science is called alchemy and is kind of a cross between our science and magic. When they are small children, their father leaves them to go on some mysterious quest. Then a few years later, their mother passes away from a sudden illness. In their grief, the two boys decide to try to bring their mother back using a rare alchemy experimental technique. Of course, the experiment does not work and both both are badly injured. Since the military of their country greatly values alchemists, the boys decide to join the military so they can find the legendary philosophers stone which will fix both their injuries. On the way, they make many friends and enemies and tell one of the best stories of family, friendship, and love that you will see in an anime series.

Note: This series skips one adventure in a town that takes place early in the original series (ep 9) and the manga. The main character from that adventure, Lieutenant Yoki, shows up in episode 13 without explanation. Either read the linked wiki entry or watch episode 9 from the original series to find out about him. If I hadn't seen the first series, his appearance would have driven me nuts. lol.

Last Exile

Last Exile is a science fiction steam punk anime series that is not that well known. The basic story is about two orphans that pilot a "van" ship which they make their living with delivering messages. The technology is both very advanced, anti gravity drives, and old like the analog dials used as read outs for a ship. You are thrown into the world of this story right away. No explanations of where it takes place or what is going on. You just sorta have to figure things out, which is what makes this series great. Highly recommended.

Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex (1st Season)

Ghost in the Shell (GiTS) is a manga created by Masamune Shirow. The manga has spawned a number of movies and anime shows. GiTS is basically a cop show that focuses on a group of Japanese cyborg anti-terrorism police (more like FBI in US). The leader of the group Motoko Kusinagi (The Major), is a full body cyborg (meaning she started out as a human but at a young age a terminal illness forced her to move her mind to a 100% artificial robot body).

This anime TV series is one of my all time favorites. Ever wonder what it would be like if your brain was connected to the Internet? Well then, this is your show. Each team member is hooked into the Internet, have things like heads up displays and can multitask like a computer. Plus the cyborg bodies make them like super heroes. The show is episodic with a main thread focused on catching a hacker named "The Laughing Man". Just an awesome show. There is a second season, but it is not nearly as good as the first.

My Hero Academia

One of the most popular anime series in the world right now, deservedly so. Young Izuku Midoriya is born in a world where super powers (or quirks) are common place. However, when he is tested for a quick, he has none. A fateful encounter with a hero changes his life and the world.

The series has a lot of action and a lot of heart. The show follow Midoriya as he attends a high school with other young heroes. Possibly a little violent and scary for the young ones.
